Building Businesses with Purpose: Scott Hack on Real Estate, Coffee, and Community

Entrepreneurship often starts with an idea — but turning that idea into multiple successful ventures takes creativity, persistence, and a willingness to try new things.
In this episode of the 502 Entrepreneurs Podcast, host Carl Armijo sits down with Scott Hack, owner and broker of Finish Line Realty, conference organizer, and founder of Starting Gate Coffee.
Scott’s entrepreneurial journey spans several industries, but one thing remains consistent: building businesses that connect people.
Growing Up Around Entrepreneurship
Scott’s introduction to entrepreneurship started early.
With a mother who has been a real estate agent for decades and a father who worked as a custom home builder, business discussions were a regular part of life growing up.
“I was always exposed to entrepreneurship at an early age.”
Before entering real estate, Scott even owned a pizza restaurant where he managed around 30 employees. That experience gave him valuable lessons in leadership, operations, and the realities of running a business.
Those lessons still influence how he runs his brokerage today.
Building an Independent Brokerage
Scott founded Finish Line Realty nearly 15 years ago. Today, the brokerage has a team of more than a dozen agents focused on residential real estate in the Louisville area.
Running an independent brokerage comes with both advantages and challenges.
Large franchise brokerages often benefit from national branding and shared vendor agreements. But Scott believes independence offers something equally valuable — control.
“I love being able to be the small ship that can make a really quick U-turn if I need to.”
Being nimble allows Scott to adapt quickly to industry changes, new technology, and evolving market conditions.
Creating the Real Estate Distilled Conference
One of Scott’s most unique projects is Real Estate Distilled, a conference he organizes with his wife Liz.
The idea originally came from a gap in the industry. Independent brokerages didn’t always have the same training events or conferences available to larger franchise networks.
So Scott built one.
Today the event attracts 175–200 agents from across the country, including attendees from more than 30 states.
The conference blends professional education with Louisville’s unique culture, incorporating local attractions like bourbon experiences and city tours.
More importantly, it helps agents build meaningful relationships.
“The biggest benefit has really been building a community.”
Coffee as a Marketing Strategy
Another creative idea Scott developed is Starting Gate Coffee, a coffee brand that supports his brokerage and helps build client relationships.
Instead of traditional marketing giveaways, Scott uses coffee as a conversation starter.
When he meets with clients or attends events, he brings bags of coffee as a gift. It’s a small but memorable way to stay connected.
The coffee also plays a role in community outreach, including donations to school events and silent auctions.
And soon, it may help local organizations raise money.
Scott is currently developing a fundraising program that will allow nonprofits, sports teams, and community groups to sell the coffee as a fundraiser.
Experimenting with AI and Custom Software
Scott is also exploring how artificial intelligence can help entrepreneurs build tools tailored to their businesses.
Using AI-assisted coding, he has begun building internal software systems for his brokerage.
These tools help manage contracts, track transaction partners, and capture data that could lead to better business insights.
“Why use a tool that’s only 60–70% of what you need when you can build one that fits your exact process?”
It’s another example of Scott’s entrepreneurial mindset — constantly looking for ways to improve systems and create new opportunities.
Entrepreneurship Is About Community
Throughout the conversation, one theme comes up again and again: community.
Whether it’s hosting a conference, running a coffee brand, or supporting local organizations, Scott believes businesses thrive when they stay connected to the people they serve.
Entrepreneurship isn’t just about building companies.
It’s about building relationships.
